2016 Weinbach Offer
A little more sacred Alsatian juice to go around
If there was ever any doubt about the aging potential of white wines, dust off an old bottle of Weinbach. These are the best of Alsace, bursting with exotic fruit and mineral tension. For the last three decades, this legendary estate has been run by a trio of fiercely passionate women — Colette Faller and her daughters Laurence and Catherine. They converted the property to biodynamic farming (certified by Demeter in 2010) in an effort to push the limits of quality. Today, Catherine and her son Théo make a finite amount of wine from thirty hectares of vines located within some famed Grand Cru sites, including Schlossberg.
The 2016 vintage in France was somewhat erratic. Catherine says it was one-of-a-kind and produced some brilliant wines despite the challenges. The Vosges mountains that border Alsace to the west provided protection against the hail and frost that afflicted Chablis. Despite the risk of mildew during the rainy spring months, Weinbach remained steadfast in their organic and biodynamic practices. Weather improved by early July, clearing the way for slow and steady ripening. Green harvesting (the costly practice of dropping fruit) was done to energize the crop and concentrate flavours in the grapes.
These are some of the purest and most intensely flavoured wines in the world. The 2016 vintage is defined by freshness, structure, and seductive aromatics.
2016 Pinot Gris Cuvée Sainte Catherine
$72.99 / bottle (6 btls/cs) — 20 cases available
This wine comes from the lower slope of the Schlossberg vineyard and the Clos des Capuchins. It’s the driest Pinot Gris in the range with a rich, broad palate.
2016 Riesling Cuvée Théo
$54.99 / bottle (6 btls/cs)
This entry-level bottling is named after Colette’s husband and founder of the winery. A classically dry, racy style with candied citrus and stony minerality.
2016 Riesling Cuvée Colette
$82.99 / bottle (6 btls/cs)
The matriarchal wine. The fruit here is harvested slightly later and fermented to dryness. This is a riper style showing bold fruit, delicate spice and total finesse.
2016 Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg
$84.99 / bottle (6 btls/cs) — 10 cases available
Positively high brow. From the highest part of the famous Grand Cru slope planted on granite soils. This is dense yet elegant with a steely character.
2016 Gewurztraminer Cuvée Theo
$66.99 / bottle (6 btls/cs)
Weinbach has a magic touch with Gewurz. This off-dry style is made from the oldest vines of the Clos des Capuchins estate vineyard. A classically rich and oily wine with lychee, rose petals and clove. Intense but never cloying.
2016 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Furstentum
$99.99 / bottle (6 btls/cs)
Power and complexity from this exceptional Cru. Tropical fruit, exotic spice and floral notes intertwine. A background note of orange zest is typical of the site.
