France – Domaine Le Soula
In 2001 Gérard Gauby revealed that he had discovered some vines high up in the Agly valley (he had, in fact, discovered some abandoned vines in the Fenouillèdes). He told Roy Richards and Mark Walford of his discovery, which presented an opportunity for them to go into partnership. After some thought, Roy and Mark decided to commit to the venture.
They bought an old building in Saint Martin de Fenouillet in the heart of the vineyards. This was transformed into Soula’s first cellars and from the first vintage in 2001, the reputation of Soula started to be established.
In 2008, Gérald Standley joined the team. At the same time, the cellars and winery were moved to Prugnanes to the old cooperative. But Gerald left in May 2016 for new challenges in Bordeaux with his wife.
Wendy Paillé joined the team in February 2016, just a few months before to inaugurate the new ecofriendly building in Saint Martin de Fenouillet in May.
The key to Soula’s unique character is the terroir, but the commitment and energy of those involved in this enterprise is essential to put that character into the bottle:
Gérard Gauby discovered this unique terroir in the Fenouillèdes, unearthing its potential to make great wine.
In 2012 Mark Walford took over from Roy Richards and he now runs the vineyard with Wendy Paillé.
Those who work alongside Wendy Paillé, willingly invest their time and energy on a daily basis to produce excellent wine.
The spirit of Soula lies with the respect that those involved have for the soil and what fills our glass.
