France – Reine et Pape
Established in 2009, Reine et Pape is a Canadian-owned winery located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. Reine et Pape is owned by a young couple in Toronto with a love of French wine and a passion for the Languedoc region, which is becoming one of the most exciting wine regions in France.
During a 2009 holiday in the Languedoc-Roussillion region of France, the couple purchased the small plot of vines and partnered with a renowned local winemaker to produce a truly unique wine in small quantities. “Like many people, we talked – usually over a glass of Syrah, of retiring in the south of France, spending our days working in the vineyard. We simply didn’t want to wait but we weren’t quite ready to quit our day jobs either. The opportunity to buy the winery and import the wine to sell in Canada allows us the chance to pursue our passion for wine now … not 30 years from now.”
The name Reine et Pape is a play on the Toronto intersection ‘Queen and Pape’ where the owners have a home. The first vintage, Cuvee Ellena Syrah 2011 is 100% Syrah grapes and only 240 cases of the vintage have been produced.
As a boutique winery, Reine et Pape is about more than just wine. The wine is the output of an experience; of the terroir, the temperature and the personality of the winemaker. Our goal is to bring that full experience to curious wine drinkers and our hope is that our customers will not only enjoy our wine, but will learn more about how it is made, and about the Languedoc region which is producing some of the most unexpected and interesting wines today.
