Italy – Fattoria di Grignano
Fattoria di Grignano is the site of a stunning 15th century villa built by the Marchesi Gondi. I don’t know who they were, but I like the name. More importantly I like the wine. Since 1972 it has been owned by the Inghiramis family, one of the most important names in Italian fashion. This is the main villa on this 600 hectare estate that incorporates 47 farms. It is impressive to say the least. Rufina is recognized as one of the finest wine producing zones in Chianti.
Today, Rufina is one of the seven geographic specifications of Chianti. The “Chianti Rufina” DOCG area covers the municipalities of Pelago, Pontassieve, Rufina, Londa and Dicomano. Here robust and flavourful Sangiovese worthy of age is the norm. Canaiolo, Trebbiano toscano and Malvasia del Chianti are also grown, but you don’t have time for these minor details. Fattoria di Grignano has recently seen the rooms in the lovely cellars of the historic villa restored to their original splendour. There are now completely new areas for producing and aging wine.
