Dense colour with deep purple hues. Complex aromas of dark chocolate and vanillin oak. The Hunter Valley component adds a savoury spice element but the dominant feature is the black fruit pastille of McLaren Vale. Ripe dusty tannins will benefit the wine over the next 10 years or so.
Combination open and roto red fermenters,80% French oak of which 30% new, balance 1-2 year old,20% older American,in oak 18 months. The 2013 McLaren Vale vintage was fairly quick with dry conditions and an early harvest with yields down 10 to 30%. Rated as a very high quality vintage by local winemakers. With McLaren Vale being true Mediterranean/maritime in climate,no surprises that the region was rain free from December 2013 onwards. the summer was officially recognised as the hottest in Australia since records began. As such,no disease pressure and a very short harvest period with the bulk of fruit picked by early March. Our decision to pick a bit earlier has paid off with this wine having vibrant sweet fruit and balance. The balance of the blend is Hunter Valley and Beechworth with both regions enjoying a perfect summer harvest.
