Wine Of The Week: De Martino | January 17, 2019

Wine of the Week | De Martino

January is here and with it we’d like to share one of our very favourite value wineries of our portfolio. De Martino is one of Chile’s most famous wineries and one of the most forward-thinking and accomplished within the Lifford stable of wines. Founded in 1934, the winery is now stewarded by fourth generation, Marco Antonio and Sebastián de Martino alongside winemaker Marcelo Retamel. The winery works with carefully selected plots from around the country, seeking purity, place and balance through organic, dry farming of the highest quality. Their efforts have paid off; De Martino consistently tops best-of lists and are praised by some of the toughest critics around the world from Jancis Robinson to Robert Parker to Jamie Goode.

This past October, De Martino was selected as one of the best wineries in Chile by Robert Parker’s Extraordinary Wineries Award, one of twenty-five wineries in the Americas and one of just three in Chile. Soon before, they were ranked among the Top 100 Wineries in the World according to Wine & Spirits magazine and winemaker Marco Retamel was named one of the most renowned 50 winemakers in the world coming in at 13, the top place in Latin America. Jancis Robinson MW has called De Martino ”one of the most dynamic and enterprising of Chile’s many enterprising and experimental companies”. All that to say, the world has noticed.

We carry a range of their wines including their famed and rare amphora aged Cinsault ($44.99 x 6 packs) and amphora aged skin-contact Moscatel ($44.99 x 6 packs), which are both so fine and special, but for quality and value the 347 Chardonnay and Carmenere cannot be beat. 347 refers to the number of experimental plantings winemaker Marcelo researched to determine which vineyards were most suited to each varietal. These wines are the culmination of 12 years’ research. A top pick for many restaurant ‘by the glass lists’ both easily delight at weekday price points.

347 Chardonnay
$21.99 per bottle | 12 bottles per case

Crisp clean and bone dry! The 347 range are single varietal wines composed of carefully selected parcels of fruit from different sub-regions of a particular valley. The result is a multi-dimensional wine, a fusion of unique character. The Chardonnay comes from cool climate Limarí close to the Pacific Ocean and is bursting with fresh papaya fruit and crisp citrus. Fresh, fruity and dry, this is an easy pairing for lighter fare or on its own.

347 Carmenere
$21.99 per bottle | 12 bottles per case

Rich, ripe and balanced Carmenere from De Martino’s home, Maipo. Deep, dark ruby with a soft, full and pepper-spice palate that begs for grilled meat, a fire place, or cold bones that demand warming. Perfectly balanced and instantly enjoyable.
