Wine of the Week | Il Poggione 2012 Brunello Riserva | March 8, 2018

It’s here! Well, it’s in Italy. Reserve now for delivery in June.
Another sensational release from this legendary producer!

There is a reason that Il Poggione has a cult following. Lovers of fine Brunello know that year after year the historic Tuscan winery produces one of the best-value bottles in all of Montalcino. The estate is located just outside the beautiful hilltop village of Sant’Angelo in Colle in the southern part of the appellation. Il Poggione is one of the original three producers of Brunello and is still owned by the Franceschi family, now in its fifth generation. Winemaker Fabrizio Bindocci has been at Il Poggione for over 40 years! Today he is helped by his son Alessandro in the cellar, where the pair sticks to a traditional approach. Wines are fermented naturally with the cap submerged (skins are kept in contact with the juice to extract colour and tannin) producing a structured, long-lived style.

Il Poggione only makes the Riserva Brunello in the best vintages. It is always a single-vineyard wine, using fruit from the estate’s oldest block of Sangiovese planted in 1964 (in more recent years they started putting ‘Vigna Paganelli’ on the label). The wine is aged for four years in large French barrels or ‘botti’, no portion of which is new, to preserve the pure, magical character of Sangiovese.

95 Points, Monica Larner – Parker’s Wine Advocate

‘Here’s a beautifully rich and succulent Brunello that drinks very nicely straight out of the gate. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli delivers a warm, inviting and velvety presentation. This bold wine is redolent of black cherry and dried blackberry with sweet almond, toasted spice and balsam herb on the long finish. What stands out most, however, is the wine’s rich texture that floods the mouth from front to back. That richness is fueled by the warmth of the vintage but also by the magnificent oak integration. This Riserva is aged in botti grandi for four long years.’
