Wine Of The Week: Le Soula, Star Of The Cotes Catalanes | November 1, 2018

wine of the week | Le Soula

As the weather begins to turn, we begin to crave comforting richer, but balanced reds and savoury whites.

This week’s wine of the week is about one of our favourite new producers. Le Soula is small production, biodynamically farmed and most importantly, utterly delicious.

Le Soula is the passion project of Mark Walford, one of the UK’s first top distributors of fine French wine. When his importing agency was snapped up by Berry Bros. & Rudd, he turned to the Roussillon, where cult winemaker Gérard Gauby had a vision. Together, they began to explore the high altitude vines of the Fenouillèdes in the foothills of the Pyrénées, up above the Agly valley. There they found old Vermouth vines, some over 100 years old.

What started as a small project became much larger as they both fell in love with the region and quality of these high altitude, old vines combining freshness and vitality. Poor granitic soil, the heat of the Southern sun and cold nights are a recipe for powerful, unique wine with richness and acidity. Though technically French, their Cotes Catalans designation has them being poured at top michelin star restaurants across Spain and France.

We were lucky enough to visit last year and were stuck by the quality and focus of the winery. They make four main wines: their top red and white under the Soula name and their petit wines under their Trigone label. The Soula wines are their flagship meant for ageing and are some of the finest wines of our entire portfolio. The Trigone are perfect, high-end everyday wines that fly by-the-glass in some of our favourite restaurants around the world and are extremely versatile thanks to their mountain acidity. We have all four wines in stock, see information below. Though technically under the natural designation, Mark prefers to identify them as Vins D’Altitudes’ their mountain footprint and terroir coming first and all wine making choices made with the goal of realizing the region’s potential. They stood out from the moment we tasted them and we are proud to offer the full range today. You will not regret taking a chance on these star-wines.
