GAROFOLI, Marche, Italy
2014 ‘Podium’ Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi
$36.99 (6 btls/cs)
Like so many other things from the nineties, Verdicchio is back! Italy’s coastal Marche region is home to some of the best-value wines the country has to offer with Montepulciano-based reds and serious whites from the native Pecorino and Verdicchio grapes. It’s easy to see why the region might have traditionally been overshadowed by, say, nearby Tuscany but the Marche is hitting its stride after zoning in on what it does best: Verdicchio. Garofoli has been producing wines from this unique grape for over a hundred years, making them one of the oldest wineries in this (comparatively) young winemaking region. The Garofoli family used to make wines for religious travelers in the late nineteenth century because the estate sat along the pilgrimage route to the local church. In later years the audience changed, and wines improved, but Verdicchio (like Pinot Grigio and Soave) was over-cropped and produced neutral, lackluster wines.
Garofoli is now in its fifth generation and quality has soared. Yields have been dramatically reduced to give the wines concentration and structure. The best expressions of Verdicchio come from the Castelli dei Jesi DOC, which is an old seabed with limestone-rich soils. Of the winery’s three different bottlings of Verdicchio, all of which are fermented in underground concrete tanks, Podium is the top tier. The wine spends time on the lees giving it a creamy texture and is aged for 15 months in steel tanks before bottling. This is proof that Verdicchio can produce a world-class wine with richness, elegance, and potential for age.
91 Points, Ian d’Agata
Fresh citrus, yellow apple, minerals and almond flowers: an essence of Verdicchio. Then juicy and vibrant, revealing a strong mineral edge to the orchard fruit flavors. Finishes long and zingy. Spent 10 months on the lees.
