Wine of the Week | Quinta do Portal Colheita Red | September 27, 2017

QUINTA DO PORTAL 2013 Colheita Red, Douro DOC $24.99 (6 btls/cs) Quinta do Portal islocated in the breathtaking Douro, flanked by steep hills and terraced vineyards. The family has been involved in Port production since the late nineteenth century and began Quinta do Portal in the mid-nineties, where they produce Douro reds and fortified wines from Moscatel. The vineyards all sit within the Cima (upper) Corgo sub-region along the Pinhão river, a tributary of the Douro. Their ideal location at between 3-500 meters above sea level mitigates the summer heat and provides cool nights to preserve acidity. A lot of investment has gone into Portal. The spectacular modern winery was designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, which includes gravity fed technology and houses all of the original Port vats. Winemaking is overseen by Pascal Chatonnet from the Institut d’Oenologie in Bordeaux, along with winemaker Paulo Coutinho. The wines at Portal are known for their freshness and authenticity, achieved through careful ripening of these ‘noble’ native grapes. A classic Douro red with ripe blackberry fruit tempered by firm tannins. This is an approachable yet structured wine, perfect for late-summer BBQ fare. Delicate wood spice and cedar notes add complexity here. Acidity creeps in on the finish, keeping things fresh. 60% Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) 25% Touriga Nacional 15% Touriga Franca To Place Your Order: Call Michelle Desroches directly at (416) 779 4101 or Via Email: MichelleD@lifford.com
