Wine of the Week | Standout California Cab from Marietta | January 19, 2018

MARIETTA, Sonoma County
2014 Armé Cabernet Sauvignon
$42.99 (12 btls/cs)

Marietta is the winery you hope to find in Sonoma. Something about Napa’s modest neighbour makes you think of dirt roads, good folks, and wineries run out of barns. Marietta has evolved from its humble beginnings but the goal has always been the same — to make good value red blends for everyone. Chris Bilbro started the winery in the late seventies and kept things simple. He worked with some of the best growers and produced wines that were mostly non-varietal and non-vintage, using whatever the blend required to be balanced. Chris raised three sons around the winery who now all run their own projects in the industry. Scot and Jake bought out their dad in 2012 and today Scot is the sole owner and winemaker. Jake and his wife had purchasedLimerick Lane in Russian River Valley (we just received our first order of their Zin!) and decided to focus their attention there. Sam, the youngest, started his own winery where he makes a tiny amount of wine from Piedmontese grapes! Stay tuned for the fresh and aromatics wines of Idlewild, coming soon.
Under Scot’s direction, Marietta got a new look. He spent the better part of last year rebranding to reflect the passing of the torch. Don’t be misled by the modern labels, though — Scot is still all about no-fuss winemaking. He relies on bold California fruit and uses restraint when it comes to new oak. The Armé Cabernet belongs to the Family series of wines all named after important figures. Armé was a great great uncle, and Marietta’s husband, who Scot described as a ‘dapper fly fisherman with slicked back white hair.’ The Cab named after him is aptly old school but totally suave and elegant. When I asked Scot what his preferred drinking window is for Marietta wines he said now. These wines can be aged a handful of years but are irresistible in their youth.

There’s more here than just blackberries and vanilla. Armé is aged for 20 months in neutral barrels. Without any new oak, the true Cab character comes through.

92 Points, Antonio Galloni
A bold, pungent wine, the 2014 Armé offers a decidedly old school-influenced profile of dark stone fruit, black olive, herb, tobacco and licorice. Cool and savory, but with considerable depth, the 2014 Armé is another knock-out wine from Scot Bilbro. Readers looking for a value-priced California Cabernet will flip out over this wine. This is a very serious wine for the money.
