BURGESS CELLARS

Founded by Tom Burgess in 1972 after the purchase of the original Souverain Winery on the hillside of Howell Mountain, the winery has been continuously owned and operated by the Burgess family until the acquisition by the Lawrence Family in 2020.

The winery has a long-standing reputation for producing top Cabernet Sauvignon wines from its 11-hectare vineyard (27 acres) on Howell Mountain, which includes 30-year-old vines. Since its inception, Cabernet Sauvignon has been the flagship variety, though the brand has since expanded its portfolio to include Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Chardonnay wines. Under Meghan Zobeck’s leadership, the winery is practicing regenerative, biodynamic and organic farming.

Winemaker Notes

A dense and concentrated cabernet with aromas and flavors of confectionary blackberry and stewed cassis. The lush fruit is brought into balance by high tone herbal aromatics of mint, sage, and sweet tobacco. The distinctively thick-skinned Cabernet grapes provide a long velvety finish.

Blend: 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petite Verdot, 4% Malbec

Meghan Zobeck makes this wine with cabernet from Burgess’s Sorenson Vineyard, a west-facing parcel on Howell Mountain, blending in a small amount of petit verdot and malbec from Haymaker, an eastfacing vineyard slightly higher in elevation. Aged mostly in neutral French oak barrels (15 percent were new), this developed a textural grace without the weight of oak tannins, feeling airy in its richness. There’s darkness to the fruit and a marrow-bone savor, ending light and breezy.

Winemaker Notes

The reserve wines for Burgess are produced with grapes from the oldest vines on our Sorenson Vineyard, planted in 1979. Aromas and flavors of just ripened blue and red fruit are accentuated by the savory herbal aromatics of rosemary and thyme. There is a touch of mint as well as intense earthy graphite aromas.

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 2.5% Malbec, 2.5% Merlot
